Curry Chandler

Curry Chandler is a writer, researcher, and independent scholar working in the field of communication and media studies. His writing on media theory and policy has been published in the popular press as well as academic journals. Curry approaches the study of communication from a distinctly critical perspective, and with a commitment to addressing inequality in power relations. The scope of his research activity includes media ecology, political economy, and the critique of ideology.

Curry is a graduate student in the Communication Department at the University of Pittsburgh, having previously earned degrees from Pepperdine University and the University of Central Florida.

  • In September 2024 the online version of my research articlePainting an inclusive enclosure: Post-racial public art as compensatory cultural strategy in Pittsburgh” was published in Environment and Planning D: Society and Space.

  • In November 2022 the online version of my research articleJane Jacobs’ Smart-Home Enthymemes: Ambiguous Urban Appeals in Google’s Toronto Smart City was published in Western Journal of Communication.

  • In August 2022 the online version of my research article “Contested autonomy in “smart” and “inclusive” innovation: test-driving transportation technology and policy in Pittsburgh” was published in Urban Geography.

  • In November 2021 I received a research grant through the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s “Lost Cities” funding initiative along with my collaborators Dr. Caitlin Bruce and Dr. Ricardo Klein.

  • In April 2021 the Urban Communication Reader IV — co-edited by erin mcclellan, Yongjun Shin, and myself — was published by the Peter Lang press.
